One other specific piece of guidance we’ve offered is that low-quality content on some parts of a website can impact the whole site’s rankings, and thus removing low quality pages, merging or improving the content of individual shallow pages into more useful pages, or moving low quality pages to a different domain could eventually help the rankings of your higher-quality content.
This is one of the most important paragraph that I’ve read from the blog post title “More guidance on building high-quality sites” from Google Webmaster Central Blog. In order to make sure that your blog or website stays on top of Google search ranking, you need to remove every possible low quality pages. In other words you have to clean up your blog or website from top to bottom. And this includes the initial first blog post that you have written years ago. No doubt this is a lot of work but if it helps increase your site ranking, it is definitely worth the effort. Especially if your blog or website is beginning to slip down from Google search ranking, it is best to get starting on it now. Below are some of the things that you need to focus on while going through your blog or website.
Remove links that pointed to poor quality sites. Linking to poor quality site will affect site ranking. Ever since Google started to upgrade their search engine algorithm, I received several emails from site owners requesting to have their links remove. This also means that a blog post introducing a long list of websites might do more harm than increasing site quality. You may also try to check if the links are still alive. You might be surprise to find that most of the old links are no longer pointing to the original site any more.
Edit and correct errors done during previous process such as updating WordPress or migrating site. There are lots of small changes or errors that we might not realize when updating WordPress or migrating site. Although these errors might not affect your daily blogging activity, it might have a great impact towards the quality of the page. One of the errors that I found on my blog is the punctuation mark (‘) becomes question mark (?). Thus many of my blog posts are having errors like “I?m” or “can?t”. This small error definitely will reduce the quality of my pages, and this is just one of the errors only.
Update or improve the writing quality of blog posts. You may take some time to read through previous old blog posts and see if it feels right. I’m sure you are a better writer now compare to the time when you are just starting to blog. Every style, structural and grammar errors you fix increase site quality. You may also try to improve the quality of the blog posts by adding few sentences or a paragraph.
Remember that the purpose is to increase the quality of blog posts and pages. You have to make necessary changes and improvement so that your blog or website is not affected by low quality pages.
